Daniel H. Birman
Daniel H. Birman recently produced Brace for Impact, a documentary for TLC about the pilot who landed his plane on the Hudson River. He is also completing a documentary feature, She’s Screaming: Nobody’s Listening, about the psychological complexity of a young girl who committed murder. He recently finished a one-hour special for National Geographic Channel. Naked Science: Death of the Universe, which considers new theories about how the universe will end. Other recent credits include Europa: Mystery of the Ice Moon, a one-hour special for the Science Channel, and prior to that, Medical Maverick – two one-hour shows for Discovery Health Channel. Birman produced the four-part program The Team, the first-ever nonfiction series for Nickelodeon and the Tom Lynch Company; the Discovery Health series Alternatives: Uncovered and Chopper Rescue, and a pilot for Discovery Health, among others. Birman is on the faculty at USC’s Annenberg School of Journalism, and is a frequent speaker and panelist on the subject of nonfiction writing and producing. Birman helped build the Nonfiction peer group as one of the largest peer groups within the Television Academy. He has served secretary and as emmy magazine’s editorial advisor. He also has chaired the Ethics Committee, By-Laws Committee and serves on the Academy Foundation’s Education Committee.
Shari Cookson
Shari Cookson is an Emmy award-winning filmmaker. Her latest film, The Memory Loss Tapes, won an Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking. She directed and produced the documentary, part of HBO’s Alzheimer’s Project, with filmmaking partner Nick Doob. She and Doob worked without additional crew to achieve an intimate and personal style of filmmaking. Cookson’s HBO documentary credits also include the Emmy-nominated films All Aboard! Rosie’s Family Cruise and Living Dolls: The Making of a Child Beauty Queen; Skinheads USA, which earned her a DGA nomination; and Asylum, a Sundance selection. Other credits include Lifetime’s Signature Series; and On Campus, for which she won a Los Angeles Area Emmy. A graduate of USC, Cookson received the Television Academy’s college documentary award for her student film Gunshot. She lives in Los Angeles with her two children and husband, editor Charlton McMillan, with whom she has collaborated on numerous films.
